“Songfest” was originally commissioned to celebrate the bicentenary of the USA (1976), yet speaks directly to today's audiences with its timeless message. Through the inspired words of thirteen American poets including Gertrude Stein, Langston Hughes, Edgar Allan Poe, and Walt Whitman, Bernstein composed a masterful score that touches on racial injustice, women's rights, gay rights, and much more. It's a fascinating and timely work amidst the coronavirus pandemic and the American Black Lives Matter movement. With:
